Bring in bookmarks and files
Move an existing collection into Gleanary without fetching every page first.
Import bookmarks
Section titled “Import bookmarks”Gleanary reads bookmark exports from Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Raindrop. It also reads any CSV file with a column of web addresses, such as exports from Pocket or Instapaper.
- Export your bookmarks from your browser or bookmarking app as an HTML or CSV file.
- In Gleanary, choose Import Bookmarks… and select the file.
- Choose where each folder from the export goes: an existing category, a new category, or Leave unfiled.
- Import the bookmarks.
To have Gleanary suggest a category for every folder, choose Ask Librarian before you import. If you use ChatGPT, this sends folder names, counts and a few titles to OpenAI.
What an import does
Section titled “What an import does”- Each bookmark becomes an item built from the export alone: its title, excerpt, notes, highlights, folder, tags and date. Nothing is downloaded, and no AI is used.
- Each item keeps the date you bookmarked it.
- Bookmarks already in your library are skipped.
- Only web links that start with
httporhttpsare imported. - Export files can be up to 200 MB.
Fetch the pages
Section titled “Fetch the pages”Gleanary fetches a bookmark’s page the first time you open it, and updates the same item. If the page can’t be fetched, the item shows Couldn’t fetch the page and a Try Again button.
To fetch pages without opening each one, turn on the Bookmark fetcher automation. It fetches a few unopened bookmarks at a time, newest first. See Automations.
File what’s left
Section titled “File what’s left”Bookmarks you left unfiled wait in your library. After an import, choose Suggest Homes for N Unfiled… to have Gleanary propose categories for them.
Add files
Section titled “Add files”Gleanary saves PDF, HTML, plain text and Markdown files up to 50 MB each. To add files, do one of these:
- Choose Attach Documents… and select one or more files.
- Drag files onto the library.
- Click + in chat to attach a single file.
For PDF pages with no text layer, such as scans, Gleanary reads the text from the page image.
Gleanary can’t import a folder of files or a notes vault from another app. Add the files themselves instead.
Web links
Section titled “Web links”Dragging a web link onto the library doesn’t save it. Paste links into chat instead.
